Two Women Caught Mailbox Fishing On Long Island, Police Say

Two women were caught red-handed mailbox fishing on Long Island, police said.

The incident that led to the arrests happened on Wednesday, Dec. 25 at 2:20 a.m. in Atlantic Beach.

According to Nassau County Police detectives, a Fourth Precinct officer while on patrol observed Yoli Gomez Osoria, 27, of the Bronx, standing in front of the post office located at 2009 Park St. retrieving an object from inside a metal mailbox.

Osoria then fled on foot but was soon after placed into custody without further incident, said police.

A device used to take mail out mailboxes was found on Osoria's presence, according to police.

Gomez Osoria’s car, a 1999 Acura, was located nearby with a woman inside, Andrea Gomez, 28, also of the Bronx. Stolen checks and multiple bills of forged US currency were found inside the vehicle.

Gomez was also placed into custody without further incident. 

Upon further investigation, multiple pieces of US mail were located inside Gomez’s purse.

Osoria was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of stolen property and possession of burglars tools. 

Gomez was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, seven counts of criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Both women will be arraigned on Thursday, Dec. 26, at First District Court in Hempstead
